Tribes Restaurant

This review/write-up takes us off the beaten track a little. I do not expect many of you to try this restaurant, but you should.
But first, this review starts a year or so ago when our friend Steve sent me an email that started out like this: "Well, I had a few drinks last night."
Long story short, he was at a charity auction and bid on a trip to South Africa. He won, and he decided to ask me if I wanted to go with him. So, I jump at the chance! We make all the arrangements, set up our trip, and off we go.
We fly into Johannesburg, South Africa, where we spend the night at a place called Emperors Palace Casino.
It's a typical casino with a number of bars and restaurants around the property. And, being the good tourists that we are, we made it our mission to try every bar.
In doing so, we came across a restaurant/bar called TRIBES African Grill Steak House.
We sat down to have a beer or two, and we decided to look over the menu, where we found out that they serve "[t]he very best in steaks, venison, lamb and traditional South African specialties."
At this time, we are not ready to eat, and we want to see what else was in the casino. There were other places to go, but we had our minds made up to try the TRIBES restaurant.
When we get back there, the place is not crowded, so we get sat right away. I think we both knew what we wanted from the moment we looked at the menu at the bar earlier that day. We did not waste time with any appetizers or salad. We both ordered the Game Platter.

Game Platter:

It was a "seasonal variety of available African game/ selection of game basted and grilled to perfection.
Served with onion rings and a choice of Mielie-pap."
*Mielie-pap = Afrikaans for maize porridge. Also known as pip in South Africa is a staple food of the Bantu inhabitant which is a porridge-polenta made from miele-meal [ground maize] (Like Grits)

On our plate:
*Warthog (A wild pig of Southern Africa and Eastern Africa).
This was way better than I thought it was going to be. Just like a pork loin but with so much more taste.
*Kudu Steak (A large African antelope)
This was the first time I ever had Kudo, but I would compare it to American elk: tender and tasty.
*Impala Steak (An antelope of Southern and Eastern Africa)
This may have been my favorite?? It is like venison because there is no fat at all. But also, there is no gamy flavor.
*Ostrich Fillet
Okay, maybe this was the best?? This had a black cherry feta sauce on it that was outstanding.

I think the only problem with this restaurant is that it is so far away I will not get a chance (soon, at least) to try the rest of the menu.

  1. Ostrich is one of the most delicious meats that I've ever eaten. I was totally surprised when this bird looked and tasted more like a filet mignon than chicken! You're correct that ostrich pairs well with a fruit chutney.
